Lives Filled With Wonder

Get up, eat breakfast, walk the dog, go to work, come home, walk the dog make dinner, eat dinner, clean up after dinner, go to bed.  Repeat.

Everyone has a daily routine.  Of course from day to day little things happen here and there that change it up a bit.  But for many, the same basic routine day after day begins to feel monotonous.  Sometimes it seems like you get to the end of the week only to look back and think…what did I do this week?   Where did the time go?

Even though our routines may be the same, we cannot allow ourselves to fall into the trap of just going through the daily motions.  Each day, no matter what we accomplish, where we go, who we see, is filled with wonder! We only have to open our eyes to see it all around us.

imagesOur morning routine might seem fairly boring.  It may not seem like there is any wonder in these tiny, seemingly insignificant tasks.  But that is not the case!  The food we have to eat, the toaster we use to make our morning bagels, the refrigerator that keeps our food cold, these are all wonders!  The nature outside, the pets we love so dear, the sun shining, the rain watering, each one of these tiny moments is wonder filled.  Even the simple act of getting out of bed, of having a bed and a roof over our heads.  These wondrous blessings we often take for granted.  But if we look further we can see that even the most boring days are filled with good and wondrous things.

In our lives we have moments where we search for meaning.  We fill our days with tasks and activities to try and give meaning to our lives.  But the truth is, the meaning is life!  The life we have been given and the gifts we have to offer others, that is what gives meaning to the daily routines we have.  Whether you are the head of five different volunteer committees, the head of a major company, or the head of your family. We all have our own individual calling.  One person’s call is not more or less than another person’s.  When we follow the Lord, it is not just the tasks we partake in, is the very way we live our lives!  That is what keeps our daily routine from becoming a boring, monotonous way to eat up time and transforms it into a wonder filled life of adventure in the Lord!

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”  James 1:17

imagesOur lives are filled with good things.  Even in the tough times, there are countless blessings surrounding us always.  From the tiny petals on a flower, to the shape of the clouds as they move across the sky.  From the smile on your husband’s face when he greets you after a long day at work, to the smile of a stranger on the sidewalk.  Each of these is a perfect gift from God.

God is not hiding from us.  He is surrounding us at every moment of every day!  He did not create us to walk this earth as robots.  He created us to truly live!  To take notice of His love poured out all around us.  To see the blessings He has bestowed upon us and to be filled with the love and joy that comes from them!  He created us to life lived filled with wonder!

We all have a calling.  And with those callings some responsibilities.  We have daily routines we must fulfill.  But as we go through our typical to-do lists, let’s all challenge ourselves to find more in our lives.  Each day, with each seemingly boring task, let us pray that we will take notice of a blessing within that task and use it as a moment to grow closer to God. Open our eyes to the beauty and awe that surrounds us.

Our lived are filled with wonder.  It’s time we start seeing it.

Giving Thanks to God

“O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever”    ~Psalm 107:1

With Thanksgiving only days away, everyone seems to be more grateful than usual.  People focus more on counting their blessings and take time out of their schedule this week to remember the good things they have.

This year I am reminded that our blessings are not only in the things we have, but also in what we “lack.”  God gives all good things to us and answers all our prayers in His perfect timing.

Last year at this time I had just starting praying for a family.  I was convinced that by this time, we would  be blessed with a baby or at the very least be pregnant!  But God has other plans.  I may not understand them, but I am called to trust in His perfect timing and be thankful that I have a God who loves me so much.

When we want to have a child so much, it can be easy to look at the situation and feel we are lacking something.  It is hard to see how this could possibly be a blessing.  But God’s ways are not our own and He has a plan far greater than we could imagine.  Our God is good and His love is everlasting.  How can we doubt Him?

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 4:6-7

When we ask our Heavenly Father for something, we are called to ask with open hearts, with sincere thanksgiving for all that we have been given and for the ultimate love He has for us.  When we pray, we should always be thankful and praise His name, for the love and peace of God surrounds us and comforts us even in the things we cannot seem to understand.

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my wonderful husband, my loving parents, my amazing sisters, and my whole family.  I am thankful for our little dog, for our home, our food, our jobs, our freedom.  And I am thankful most of all for our God and His astounding love and mercy.  For His wisdom and His plan for us – even when we can’t see it.

I may not know when we will have a child. And I will certainly continue to pray that God blesses us with a little one soon!  But this Thanksgiving, I am choosing to see our situation as a blessing.  While we may not have a child yet, we have been blessed with wonderful time together as husband and wife and our relationship with each other and with God has strengthened.

There is a reason we do not have a child yet.  Maybe someday we will know that reason.  Maybe not.  But I do know that whatever happens, God’s love and peace will always be with us.  And that is a blessing that cannot be measured and that I will forever be thankful for.

Happy Anniversary!

Tomorrow my husband and I will celebrate our 2nd anniversary as a married couple! In some ways I cannot believe it has been two whole years! It seems like yesterday we were planning the wedding, decorating the hall, and standing up in front of our family, friends, and God to pledge our love and lifelong commitment to each other. In other ways, though, it seems much longer than two years as I feel like I have known my husband forever!

I don’t mean to make this a mushy post…but I think it is important to focus on the wonderful blessings we have! Sometimes it can be easy to focus on we we lack or what we think is best for us instead of trusting in our Father’s plan. I know for me I sometimes get caught up in finances, those darn student loans, someday buying a house, and hoping for a baby. And while there is nothing wrong with saving money for a house, cutting out some extras to try and erase those student loans quicker, and praying that we might be blessed with a child, I have to make sure that those things do not become my focus. I have to be sure that I do not spend my energy on devising plans for the future rather than taking in the moments God has given me now. It is so important for us to count our blessings and praise the Lord for all He has given us. Nothing lifts your spirits more than taking in the wonder that surrounds you and praising the Creator of it all.

I feel very blessed to have such an amazing man in my life. He is so romantic, sweet, funny, smart, handsome, and most of all, he brings me closer to God. I thank the Lord everyday for bringing us together and I wanted to share with you today this song. It was our first dance at our wedding reception and I just think it is lovely. Enjoy!
